They mean the same thing and can be used the same way. But «among» is used more often
There is no difference between the two words. This is a bit hard to explain but Maybe if you wanted to sound clever /posh /impress /sound higher class when writing amongst would be a the word. Amoung is the everyday use. Amongst is used but not as often this was an older word that was shortened over time.

They mean the exact same thing. «Among» is way more commonly used. There are some idioms that use «amongst.» Those phrases would be the only time I would use «amongst,» I think.
Examples of idioms with «amongst»
1. honor amongst thieves
2. fight amongst yourselves
@Jope_D-Massants nope! both work, for me personally i say “amongst” more in that phrase but that may not be the same for everyone.

Among vs. Amongst: What’s the Difference?
Amongst and among mean the same thing, but among is more common, particularly in American English. Both words are prepositions that mean “into, surrounded by; in the midst of, so as to influence; with a share for each of; in the number, class, or group of; mutually; or by all or with the whole of.”
Linda Richman, a Saturday Night Live character, would often give her audience an interesting topic to ponder, such as “The peanut is neither a pea nor a nut,” delivering the line in an exaggerated New York accent. “Talk amongst yourselves,” she would instruct them. Why did she say “Talk amongst yourselves” instead of “Talk among yourselves?” Is amongst a word? And if so, what is the difference between among and amongst?
Among is the older version of the word, tracing its roots back to Old English. Amongst appeared in Middle English. During this period, the English language added sounds to some words to form adverbs. In modern English, we still have some words like that, such as once, always, and unawares. Amongst, whilst, whence, and amidst may sound dated to some, but they’re still part of the language.

Though the meaning of among and amongst is the same, the frequency of use is not. Among is much more popular than amongst. The Oxford English Corpus counts about 10,000 mentions of amongst in American writing. However, among appears over 300,000 times. The difference is less extreme in British English and other international English dialects, but among is always more common.
Because it appears less often than among, amongst can seem foreign, pretentious, or even incorrect. Then again, one blog quotes Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage as saying that the commentators who call amongst quaint or overrefined are “off-target.”

Use among (or amongst) to describe collective relationships: The key was hidden among the papers covering the desk. Use between when a one-to-one relationship or multiple binary relationships: The treasure map had been stuffed between the sofa cushions.

The words among and amongst can cause a bit of confusion in people’s writing because not many of us are sure when to use which one. Are they just variations of the same word? Do they have different meanings? Do they have different functions within a sentence?
In today’s post, I want to address all of these questions so that you’ll never have to second-guess yourself while writing either of these words again. So what is the difference between among vs. amongst?
The Difference Between Among and Amongst
Among and amongst are both prepositions, meaning in the midst of, surrounded by, in the company of, or in association with. For example,
So you’re now probably asking yourself, “Okay, when do I know which one to use?”
The answer to this is that there is no demonstrable difference of sense or function between the two words. This means they can both be used interchangeably; it really is a matter of style for when you choose to use one over the other.
Even though it is a matter of style, it is still important to keep your audience in mind when picking which word to use. For example, if you are writing a sophisticated novel, using amongst might be appropriate because it adds a sense of unique dialogue or conversation. But, if you are writing for everyday consumption in a newspaper or a similar outlet, among is definitely the right choice for you.
Some grammar books state that it is more common to use amongst before a word starting with a vowel. For example,

Which is More Common?
Out of the two words, among is much more commonly used in modern English, being used at a ratio of 10:1 by some estimates. In British English, amongst is used somewhat more frequently than in American English, but even in Great Britain among is the favored variant.
History of Among and Amongst
Of these two words, among is the earlier of the pair, first appearing during the Old English period. It comes from the antecedent on gemang, which yielded onmang before the year 1100. The variant amongst didn’t appear for another 500 years or so until the 16th century. It is believed that it emerged by form-association with superlatives among(e)st.
So, even though amongst sounds like it would be the older of these two words, it is actually quite a bit younger than its older brother among.
